So You Don’t Read Well!

So you don’t read well. Never fear. Lots of mature adults don’t read very well. As my youngest daughter would say “It’s no biggie”. Once you leave primary school & you can’t read you learn to wing it. Mind you in our country Australia they are so stirred about Occupational Health & Safety that all procedures must be in writing and yet most can’t read them. We even have what is Plain English – whatever that is. What country likes to admit that many of its adult population are illiterate? Fear NO MORE. Our champion King James the I & VI wanted a plain bible that could teach his kingdom to read for themselves. A bible, a copy of scriptures, without side notes and written in such a way that would teach people to read.

There are lots of ways that this is done & I don’t want to go into them just now BUT believe that this wonderful bible the King James Bible is made from heaven to you the poor reader. YES it is. OK it is designed to be read from the start to end. You can do that.

You can get the King James Bible as an audio file to play on CD as an MP3 file (don’t know what an MP3 file is? ask one of the kids at church or even your own kids or grandkids}. NO you don’t have to buy an iPOD player there are lots of cheap mp3 players out there. Your computer can probably play them. This web site I’m sending you to has a free download of the New Testament ONLY – they don’t have our understanding. BUT you can buy the Old Testament and New Testament as an MP3 on CD. I reckon you should get the NON-DRAMATISED version. You want to hear how the words are pronounced.

On this link you can listen to the books of the Old Testament or download them for free – you would have to find your place BUT you are doing this during your LOOK time RIGHT!

Here is another link – you can pick the chapters here

http://www.audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html

You may have to install RealPlayer – that’s OK there are good instructions from this link – I would not let it be your default media player & don’t get “firefox” unless you really want to. PICK THE BASIC PLAYER BECAUSE IT IS free

I WOULD NOT STREAM THE AUDIO – I WOULD DOWNLOAD the file

You just want to hear the words that you can’t pronounce RIGHT – don’t substitute this for your reading. What did I just say DON’T SUBSTITUTE LISTENING TO SOMEONE ELSE READING THE BIBLE VERSES FOR YOU READING THE BIBLE VERSES OF YOUR SET FOR THAT DAY.

I think there is a better way to find out how to say the words

Use a program like

http://www.answers.com/

This will give you a button near your clock. If you are online type the word in and you will get its meaning (well maybe) but you will get the way to pronounce the word.

I’ve been looking for a web site that will read aloud from a verse rather than a chapter – but I can’t find one for you:(

Here’s what I do – you need a bit of money for this & it’s not perfect – I use TEAXTLOUD from NexrUp – it will read aloud text from the clipboard in some very good voices. BUT you have to buy it. I use this program for lots of things – I’ll run this blog through it before I post.

BUT anyway don’t be put off because you can’t pronounce a few words. There is always a few saints who love to correct my reading – don’t you just love it – they blurt out their idea as I’m reading – I let them do so that when they do it to the poor readers those readers won’t mind so much – after all they are in good company :) How to say it as far pronouncing it in English is always somewhat flexible – it depends where you come from – that’s the power of the English Language for you :)

Anyway don’t let these little things upset you. If you really want to know how to pronounce the words, learn about our vowels and the long & short sounds and then wind yourself forward from there – you’ll be able to interrupt others as they read aloud – just don’t forget how you used to feel.

The point I’m making is get on with – read the verse – read it aloud – read out for 5 verses. Just make a joyful sound unto the Lord Jesus – at the best the angels may fret but the Lord Jesus he’ll smile. You will get better.

I hope that you are in a church which somewhere in the get-togethers they have times of bible reading out aloud. If you do then DO NOT look ahead for your verse to read! Just follow on then screw up your courage and launch out. There so many Anglo Saxon words in the King James Bible that you will get most of them right! The Anglo Saxon words are the short little ones that the uneducated and the non-intelligentsia know! God designed it that way. You will get most them right. Reading aloud breeds the confidence to read aloud. Of course it’s a bit of a setback when some 7 year old girl reads the pants of you but Hey the boys are always draging the chain in this. In the congregations that I minister in many white middle age men stumble when they read aloud. Even those who can read with confidence often don’t read the King James Bible aloud well. I’ve got a whole study on it. Anyway you get reading – read your set aloud and if others are in the room move your lips over the words. It’s great fun. Remember its THE WORD – God SAID so we can say what he says.

Don’t let anything stop you go for it

I think I like

http://www.answers.com/

SET IT UP THE WAY YOU WANT IT the dictionary part may not help you with the King James Bible meanings but you will learn how to say the word

FOR meanings go to:

http://www.1828.mshaffer.com/

I have been looking for a link to Webster’s 1528 with an audio of how to say the word but I can’t find one.

or you can buy your own copy from Authorized Version Publications

http://www.avpublications.com/avnew/home.html

Anyway whatever you do become a LOOKER after you have become a READER after you have become a PRAYER.

Push those 40 days along – we’re on our way to light:)
