This is one of the most significant things, I think, about the end time and the 2nd coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. In order to appreciate this we need to look at a couple of sets of scriptures.

The first one is what God thinks about human wisdom. The scriptures in this section need to be read slowly, clearly and with understanding.

1 Corinthians 1:18 – 21, 27 – 29

Romans 1:20 – 22

Proverbs 9:10

The account of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11

Some of this is being covered in my latest major project entitled The Adventure of the Language of the King James Bible.

Let’s go back to our 1st Scripture:

Zephaniah 3:9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.

The term “one consent” speaks of complete and true unity. In order to have complete unity we need a pure language, that is a language that everybody speaks and at the same time the language is able to perfectly communicate concepts and thoughts and both the speaker and the listener understanding the thoughts, ideas and intentions that the language means. In other words, this single language will be the reversal of the effects of the tower of Babel.

There will never be unity on this earth while there are all the different languages and not only that but also the constant ambiguity of communication within a single language.

There are constant attempts by each specialist group of knowledge and understanding to redefine a known and agreed upon set of conventions within a single language. You only have to look at areas like the law, medicine and different branches of science. Each area has its own specialised carefully defined adaption of language.

The King James Bible is a prime example of this. Its language is carefully formed to enhance the clear comprehension of what its author intends.

The problem of general comprehension within language groups not only lies in the fact that they are different languages but even within the same language human beings are not able to communicate perfectly. This is all as a result of the tower of Babel.

Without the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ – I mean the physical presence of the Lord Jesus Christ – mankind cannot be entrusted to have a united single language with perfect communication within that language without succumbing to pride and attempting to make themselves as or greater than God. This is the testimony of the word of God and a Tower of Babel and this is the testimony of the New Testament in the scriptures that we have just read.

It doesn’t take a genius to work it out. Apart from the many prophecies the main prophecy in the book of Daniel about the image spells it out abundantly clearly. The image of the dominions of men ends in feet of iron and clay. (Iron and clay do not bind together.) There will be no total domination/unity/world peaceful cooperation/one-world government of any description before the return of the rock that is cut without hands.

If ever a single thing should disprove the theory of the evolution of all things than language is a prime example. We have spent thousands of years trying to undo the effects of the tower of Babel and matters are actually getting worse. The number of language groups may be diminishing which would seem to suggest that we are moving to the evolution of a single language but the comprehension within the language groups that remain is getting more convoluted and diverse. I don’t think, for instance, that has ever been such widespread use of lies and deception at every level that exist today. And even without the deliberate intent to deceive the misunderstanding and false assumptions of people is increasing at an alarming rate.

Let us read the Bible account of why communication, verbal or written, is so complicated and uncertain.

1 Corinthians 1:18-21 KJV

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

1 Corinthians 1:27-29 KJV

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

Romans 1:20-22 KJV

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Proverbs 9:10 KJV

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Genesis 11:1-9 KJV

1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Zephaniah 3:9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.

So the Bible records that the earth had one language up until the tower of Babel. It was God who divided mankind into nations and tribes by diversifying their language. Language is unique to human beings. It is an expression of ideas and concepts that allows true fellowship. Mankind was created with perfect language skills and the ability to communicate with God and with each other and to name and classify created life.

We also have a promise from the word of God that he will give a pure uniform language to the people who call on his name to serve him “with one consent.”

The tower of Babel and Mount Sinai are both offset on the day of Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He was crucified and is risen and glorified and then the promise of the Father is sent forth to the church of the living God. They all began to speak with tongues – both the tongues of men and of angels – the tongues are still diverse and unknown to the speakers, when the tongues of men are used the hearers can perfectly understand the language by a miracle of God. It is a miracle of language that is, as far as I’m concerned, still with us today and I practised daily. It is a form of language that allows my innermost spirit to pray to God with perfect understanding and faith, even though my mind is unfruitful unless there is a manifestation of the gift of interpretation. The Holy Spirit is the earnest or the token of things yet to come. Once the Lord Jesus appears the church will have a united in uniform language just as we have been promised.

In the meantime the fact of language within the world defies the principles of evolution. It is degrading and on a downward path and in fact language groups of falling into extinction on a yearly basis. All attempts to trace the origin of language fall in a heap when people arrogantly disregard the Bible and the record of God.

It is absurd, when you consider the lengths that the intelligentsia will attempt to go to get past the need to explain anything without reference to God and his creation.

The reason that we are stuck with this great profusion of language and confusion even within the same language groups is because we must be, as a race, saved from our tendency towards pride in raising ourselves up above God our creator.

In 1 Corinthians it’s interesting that Paul’s 1st admonition to them is that they should all speak the same thing.

1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

This is frankly impossible without unity with the Lord Jesus Christ in the true spirit of charity. The practical application of the New Testament Church had divisions amongst them and never spoke the same thing. Pockets and local congregations of them did but they needed a manifestation of called spiritual oversight to arrive at it.

We Christians are the only people entrusted with unity. I don’t think that unity is possible outside of Christ. People in their foolish wisdom think that all you have to do to have unity is to get rid of lying or discrimination. It is impossible to get rid of lying without being born again. As far as discrimination goes there is a gulf fixed between the saved in the unsaved but love can bridge but cannot do away with. The table of the Lord and the broken body of Christ are the only way to a lasting unity. People often point to the church to say that it is not at all united. This is quite true because for us to be united we need the physical appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ. Perfect unity simply is not available until he returns.

When he returns he will bring a united and perfect language with him. Until then God promises to destroy the wisdom of the wise and to bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent because the wisdom of mankind is to deny the very existence of God and any claims that he has upon us as our creator. He says that you cannot know God by wisdom and so therefore it pleases God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. Verse 32 sums it up nicely one lot require a sign and the other lot seek after wisdom but we Christians preach Christ crucified to one group it is a stumbling block and to another group it is foolishness. Those who refuse to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ have no middle ground. They either see the gospel as a stumbling block or as foolishness.

I suppose that I should give you a simple explanation about the state of the body of Christ and unity within this body. Such a subject really needs a teaching session on its own but, let me give you a simple overview.

1st of all, there are 2 groups of people those who are accepted of God and those who are not accepted of God. There is a “universal” church made up of everyone who is accepted of God through the revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ. All born-again Christians are united in the sense that they have had their sins forgiven and that they are born again so that God is their father. They are united in the belief and the confession that Jesus Christ is the son of the living God and that he paid the price of their justification through his death on the cross of Calvary and that God the Father accepts that payment for the punishment of their sins by resurrecting the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead. We Christians are to love all men and to have charity towards a household of faith.

The household of faith is divided at several levels. We are all in stages of growth in Grace and revelation of the word of God.

After all Christ is the light that lights every man that comes into the world and anybody who humbly and earnestly seeks after truth will find it. Sometimes the finding of truth is almost instantaneous and at other times it is a revealing journey. For instance, the new Testament speaks of babes, young men and women and fathers and mothers both in age and in spiritual growth. We are all to grow in grace. We are also accountable for the light that we have as individuals. So you can see there are going to be differences.

In the scriptures this universal body of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ is divided into local churches that personally know one another and meat together to remember the table of the Lord. They are divided into various groups and have ministers of the gospel serving God within them. There are many scriptures that support this. For instance, the apostle Paul said that he was an apostle to some members of the body of Christ and not to others. In the new Testament church the largest division was seen between the converted Jews and the converted Gentiles. The apostle Paul spent his life in Ministry seeking to bring these 2 groups together in a united appreciation and fellowship. He did not succeed. By and large, the new Testament church was divided by geography but it was also divided by doctrine. You would think that the outpouring of the Holy Ghost would unite the people of God simply because they had received him. This is not the case as we can see from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians who came behind in no spiritual gift (manifestation) because that church was riddled with disunity and division and they most certainly did not all speak the same thing. They are admonished to be united as a fellowship.

In fact the admonition of Scripture is “to continue in the unity of the spirit unto we come to the unity of the faith”. At the very least we have to give an account for our own revelation of the word of God but at the same time we are not to consider the Christians who have a different revelation to us with any envy, jealousy, malice or pride. Just like the Sunday school song. Our confession is that we are all of Christ Jesus as those who have been born again. We most certainly contend for the faith that was once delivered onto the saints but the problem, at present, is that we do not agree on what the exact nature, for one reason or another, of that faith that was once delivered to the saints. Seeing that the scriptures tell us that evil communications corrupt good manners what we hold as pure doctrine becomes important. There are many things that we should not make divisions over, the Scripture has plenty of examples of this. There are also matters that each of us has to hold to even to the point of physical death. Spiritual maturity is all about knowing the difference between these two.

So Christians are divided on matters concerning conscience about the truth of the word of God and the doctrines that it contains but the degree of that separation will depend on many different factors not the least of which will be spiritual maturity. I do know one thing that the Christian church will not be physically united at any time before the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ. That does not mean that we should not show charity and love towards each other, pray for one another and help one another.

Personally, I am looking forward to the return of the Lord Jesus Christ and that pure united language that he will bring with him.

In the meantime let us who are of the day stay awake and watchful praying and rejoicing and eagerly awaiting his coming again to receive us unto himself so that whether we are awake or asleep (as far as our bodies are concerned) we will be together with him.
