Water baptism does NOT save

“And now why tarriest thou ….. arise and be baptised and wash away thy sins.” Acts 22:16. These words were given to the ‘apostle to be’. They were given in a manner that allowed ‘no private interpretation’. Paul arose and was baptised. He went on to teach the Gentile Church to do the things that he had done himself and taught all others to do.

Water Baptism is taught by Jesus in the Gospels, can be seen to be practiced in the Acts and taught by Apostles in the Epistles.

Account Act 8:26 – 39

26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. 27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, 28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. CEASAREA :

And he (Peter)…..COMMANDED them to be BAPTISED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. Acts 10:48.

Account Acts 10:1 – 48

1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, 2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. 3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius. 4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: 6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do. 7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. 9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: 10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, 11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. 14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. 16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven. 17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate, 18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there. 19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. 20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them. 21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come? 22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee. 23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God. 34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. KJV

All of these make up the mind of God according to His Word.

Let the BOOK speak – you would have needed to be deaf and to have had a heart of stone to have ‘toured’ the early church and NOT met with “WATER BAPTISM”. If being born again makes you a new person then water baptism confirms the start of the road of discipleship.

WHY BE BAPTISED?

The first recorded words of Jesus and His very last words are about baptism. This should say something of the place the teaching and practise of baptism ought to have in our walk with God. The first is in Matt. 3:15. “Thus it becomes US to fulfil every religious duty.”

The last is in Matt. 28:19. Where He COMMANDED the PERPETUATION of this ‘RELIGIOUS DUTY’.

1st Matthew 3:15

15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. KJV

Last Matthew 28:19

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: KJV

John 3 says that ‘we must be born again’ if we are to enter into the kingdom of God. We find that the kingdom of God is where the will of God is Done. Jesus says “If you love me –keep my commandments” and 1 Tim. 1:19 you will find that you can make a shipwreck of your faith.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. KJV

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. KJV

1 Timothy 1:19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: KJV

We are a new creation & we have been made to share in the divine nature of God.

We are given a ‘new nature’ when we come to Jesus. We soon learn that this ‘new nature’ is an obedient nature that wants to follow the Word of God. We have to decide what the Bible teaches us on many things. This will include water baptism – its meaning and administration.

[KJV] [2PE 1:4] Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

[KJV] [GAL 6:15] For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

[KJV] [2CO 5:17] Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

We have to determine what God the Father expects our response to this bible teaching on water baptism to be!

VARIOUS BAPTISMS

JOHN THE BAPTIST: This was a baptism unto repentance. Jesus was baptised of John in the river Jordan. Matt. 3:6 ‘in JordanMEANS “INTO JORDAN”, this means to “DIP” or TO IMMERSE”, the Latin word is used for dyeing cloth by dipping or soaking in. The ‘BELIEVER’S BAPTISM’ which took place after the resurrection of Christ uses all the same Greek words, and the verbs and the prepositions are the same for each baptism. This shows that the deed itself was the same in each case – total immersion INTO water – but the authority and revelation were different.

ADMINISTERING BAPTISM

John 3:23 says the reason that John was baptising in Aneon was because ‘THERE WAS MUCH WATER THERE’. You only need much water for total immersion.

John 3:23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. KJV

Jesus calls his Saving Work a BAPTISM – Luke 12:50. Our baptism is a symbolic work of His Saving Work of DEATH, BURIAL and RESURRECTION. Acts 8:38 shows that baptism was part of the gospel message.

Luke 12:50 – 51

50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: KJV

THEY “BOTH” GO DOWN INTO THE WATER AND THEY “BOTH” COME UP OUT OF THE WATER. WHAT DOTH HINDER ME TO BE BAPTISED?

Said the believer. Who can forbid water to these believers said the apostle? A far cry from “WHO SAYS SO” of today’s ‘liberated saint’.

[KJV] Acts 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

In looking at the matter and method of John’s Baptism, we see

1 Dipped INTO Water Matt. 3:6

[KJV] [MAT 3:6] And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

[KJV] [MAR 1:5] And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

2 He came UP OUT OF the water Mark 1:10

To ‘come up out of’ or ‘arise’ is a word used in Mk. 9:10 RISING from the Dead.

Matt.17:27 taking a fish that ‘came up out of’ the water. Rev. 13:11 a beast ‘coming up out of’ the earth. In order to ‘arise up out of’ it would have to be first ‘IMMERSED’.

In Mark 1:10 we see that Jesus ‘came up out of the water’. This implies that He must have been In or immersed or dipped into the Jordan. This is exactly what’ the Greek verbs, nouns and prepositions do mean.

THE TEACHING OF PASSAGES LIKE:    

Romans 6:3, Colossians 2:12, Galatians 3:27, would have little meaning if obedience to the word of God had not been carried out. How can we have revelation opened to our hearts if we have denied the very same word from ordering our lives. If we refuse to come under the authority of a New Testament command, can we expect to be then enlightened to real value and meaning? The fact of the Gospel that GOD RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD is clearly taught as underlying water baptism and arising up out of the water is the putting on of the new nature in Jesus. 1 Cor. 15 teaches about resurrection and asks the question ‘why get baptised if the dead rise not’? We are planted together in the likeness of His death that we may be together in the likeness of His resurrection. Water Baptism shows forth DEATH, BURIAL and RESURRECTION – our identity with Jesus as He was crucified, buried and rose again are seen and taught using the teaching of Water 3aptism in these passages.

In view of these teachings of death, burial and resurrection that the Bible says is portrayed in water baptism, the administration would then want to show this.

In 1 Peter 3:21 we are told that after water baptism we have a good conscience towards God. We read that eight souls were saved by water. The Greek word for ‘answer’ is ‘asking about’ or inquiry about’. It is not the putting away of the filth of the flesh that has saved us but we have been given a new and clean conscience through the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. In this capacity the water does now save us. Let us make haste to confirm the covenant by our willing and speedy obedience

In the Word we see that as soon as they believed they were baptised ‘that day’ or ‘that night’. These Scriptures indicate immediate response to the Word of God. Acts 8:77, 2:16, 10:48, 8:12-16, 8:36-39, 9:18. 22:16, 10:46-48, 16:14-15. More than enough for any saint. If you are in doubt as to your disobedience consider Acts 17:10-12 where they searched the Scriptures DAILY to REALLY find out if these things are so. Let us who delight to ‘observe all things which He has commanded’ be quick to follow His example in this grace also.

Water Baptism is a major part of the gospel. See at Gaza in Acts 8 how the preacher started in Isaiah to preach the Lord Jesus and ends up in the water baptising a believer. Mark 16:16 says ‘he that believes and is baptised shall be saved’.

Faith is united with baptism is the bible gospel.

THE WISE ‘MASTER BUILDER’S METHODS

In Acts 18:8, 1 Cor. 1:14, we find that CRISPUS, who was a synagogue ruler, believed with all his house (‘ they were of a believing age in order to believe) and was baptised in water with many Corinthians.

In Acts 19, on finding saints at Ephesus, he asks ‘Have you received the Holy Spirit yet?’ ‘No’, they say. He tells them of Jesus and they are baptised in Jesus’ Name, about 12 in all. These are the apostle Paul’s ‘methods’ – methods of foundation for us today. Paul said ‘the things that you have seen and heard in me do!’

Water Baptism must be acknowledged as Apostolic doctrine and practice. They themselves entered into the sufferings of Christ in a very real way, for they knew of the ‘joy that was to follow’.

We read in Second Book of Acts of the Apostles that “they that gladly receive his Word about our Saviour Jesus’ were baptised about 3000 souls. ……AND THEY CONTINUED steadfastly in the APOSTLE’S DOCTRINE – Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayers -and. the Lord added to the Church.”

Steadfastly:- sticking like glue to, persisting in not turning aside, has a strong and determined quality about their method of continuing.

Apostles’ Doctrine:- The Word of God is clear that the will of God is seen in the Apostles’ Doctrine. Water Baptism is Preached, Commanded, Expounded, Exhorted, Taught and Instructed by the Apostles. The Holy Spirit will give clear revelation to those who obey the Word. Water Baptism by full immersion is undoubtedly the Apostles’ doctrine. There is no mention of children or babies in any of the water baptism scenes – just men and women. Each of us must determine in our own hearts whether to follow the word with those who continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ Doctrine or just be followers of the traditions of men.

DOES THE WATER DIVIDE?

Yes, the water divides as the Red Sea divided the Church in the Wilderness from Egypt as Jordan became the way into the land of promise so water baptism divides us from our past. Romans 6 teaches that those who have been baptised are baptised into His death, that as Christ was raised in Newness of Life, so are we, too.

1 Peter says that baptism is as close in type to circumcision, except that baptism, in the power of the new birth, calls for willing obedience that is full of faith. It is not the putting away of the ‘filth of the flesh’, but the answer of a new conscience to each believer who gladly submits to the authority of the Word of God in their own lives. Let us be washed and cleansed in the Blood of Calvary and then empowered by the presence of the Holy Spirit to living obedience to the voice of God speaking to our hearts in His Son.

Circumcision is to do with babies (only males), but it was not an act of dedication as Luke 2:22. There is a difference between the two and this can be seen and understood. See (Col. 2:11,12 ) 1 Cor 12:13 There are three pratcices given to the church –

Communion –Water Baptism –Anointing with Oil by the Elders of the Church.

It is possible to know Christ and to get along without all three, but to fellowship in the land of promise and to be a pillar in the Temple of God let us obey that form of doctrine that was preached from the beginning. The Bible records the following people as being baptised, some with their household:-

Lydia – The Jailer – Crispus – Stenphanus – Gaius

Do not be put off by 1 Cor. 1:17 where Paul says ‘For Christ sent me not to baptise but to preach the gospel”. He did baptise but not everyone by himself he left it to others to actually perform the act. He did not intend to ‘heap disciples: to himself’. Jesus owns the Church and we get baptised in His name and in His authority – UNTO HIM and INTO HIM. It is vital. Mark 16:16 says ‘He that believes and is baptised shall be saved’. Shall we add to or take from this Word of God?

In Mat. 28 the Lord Jesus sends forth the apostles to preach and teach people everywhere to be the SHEEP of Jesus and follow Him. He says ‘Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel (Mk 16)…….BAPTISING THEM in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’. This is clear. The Apostle James says ‘be a doer of the word and not a hearer only’. Those saints who have received the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues and have not been baptised in water or do not feel that water baptism is binding on every believer do not know the mind of God and cannot claim, with any certainty, the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will lead into truth and truth sets us free to serve and obey Him.

Those saints who feel they cannot receive the Holy Spirit in overflowing fullness with the mighty flow of speaking in other tongues – PAY ATTENTION TO ACTS 2:38. The Apostles’ instructions and commands in Jesus Name are:

1)    Repent (in faith)

2)    Be Baptised (in accordance to the Word of God)

3)    Ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

It is obedience that brings the blessing and the new covenant has the laws written on our hearts so that we can delight to do the Will of the Father.

Stand in the inner man – obey God and trust the Word of God in your life. Become a disciple of the one ‘who only has the words of Eternal Life.’

‘And now why tarriest thou …….come and be baptised. Acts 22:16.

Some extra notes on Go into all the world ————- Baptising Them

[MAT 28:19 – 20] 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [Matthew 28:20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Baptising symbolises a spiritual message and a natural message.

Identification with the Body of Christ – FELLOWSHIP

If we see 1 John 3:16 we can see a double commitment – a spiritual one and a natural one.

Fellowship with Christ – Fellowship with the body of Christ. Water Baptism symbolises:

Believing and Belonging.

The symbol of fellowship – this person now is of us.. The double operation of a new life in Jesus Christ AND membership into the Body of Christ.

[KJV] Ephesians 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;.

The church (local) provides fellowship for the believers to belong to.
