Is symbol of Death & Resurrection

Baptism in water episode 4 – exploring the various teachings and doctrines associated with water baptism and the effect they have on our lives.

Paul tells the church at Rome that

When you are baptised into Christ you are:

Baptised into His Death

Buried in the grave with Him

Raised to life with Him

Romans 6:2-4

Romans 6:2-4  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?  3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  4  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Looking Back at Your Baptism in Water

The word of God reveals greater understanding

There is a double operation of the cross of Calvary.

There is the substitution where Jesus has to take on the penalty of your sin and die on your behalf in your stead as a substitution

There is the fellowship where you have to willingly come to an end of yourself and your old life by realising that you died also in fellowship with Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary

Must You Really Crucify Yourself?

Crucifixion is the one form of self-dying that you cannot do on your own

It is impossible to literally crucify yourself

Who will affix your last hand assuming you’ve managed to secure your feet and your other hand?

It is physically impossible to crucify yourself

Are you to really actually kill yourself spiritually?

Like everything else concerning righteousness and righteous behaviour it starts with godly sorrow and the spirit of repentance and must be continued in the spirit of faith.

You have to see the need for you to die

You have to willingly believe that you have been brought to an end on the cross of Calvary in fellowship with Jesus Christ

Romans 6:6

Romans 6:6  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

How Do You Mortify Your Members?

This is a profound question.

Does it mean to strangulate them and so gradually crush (beat) into a state of death?

Consider these two Scriptures and then consider how the righteous actually live.

Note the past tense of verse 7 (it’s a full sentence)

Colossians 3:5-7

Romans 8:13

Colossians 3:5-7  Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:  6  For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:  7  In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
Romans 8:13  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

What Does “To Die Daily” Mean?

Look at the context of the sentence it’s about being in constant jeopardy and prepared to face the possibility of physical death and even martyrdom on a daily basis:

1 Corinthians 15:30-32

1 Corinthians 15:30-32  And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?  31  I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.  32  If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die.

How Do I Keep “Under My Body”

And Bring It into Subjection?

By being temperate in all things, if you bring it into death your body will no longer carry you through the race.

1 Corinthians 9:25-27

1 Corinthians 9:25-27  And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.  26  I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:  27  But I keep under my body, and bring it  into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

So YES you have to die

But how do you die? By what manner?

You die by faith through grace the same way that received forgiveness on your repentance

The godly sorrow leads you to repentance and the knowledge that the old you has to be ended

The husband must die before the new husband can change everything

Romans 7:1-6

Romans 7:1-6  Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?  2  For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.  3  So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.  4  Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.  5  For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.  6  But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Buried in the grave with him

You, as you were, are buried and brought to an end in death.

You have to be dead and buried before you can be resurrected

Our resurrection from the dead spiritually is the first fruits of the resurrection from the dead –  the earnest

Romans 8:23

Romans 8:23  And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

in newness of life

Raised with Him

that we might live the new life

Set free from the constraints of the old way of living because we died in Christ that we might live in him and he live through us

Romans 6:4

Romans 6:4  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

That we should not serve sin

Our old self crucified with Jesus through repentance and faith

Repentance in that we realise that there is no future for us, our nature or being as we were before we were saved.

that the body of Sin is to be done away with

No longer slaves to sin

Romans 6:6

Romans 6:6  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Water is a watery grave

Our body – old life – the corpse

Death to old life

God is not improving us by any normal means, he replaces us in the new birth with the new man whose source of life is only found in Jesus

Now yield to God

New Life – New Power

Old Gone – New Come

Your old life gets buried with Christ

Your funeral service is seen in water baptism

Your start a brand new life in Christ

You rise up out of the water of baptism just like Christ rose up from the grave

You are free to live for him and by him

Romans 6:13-14

Romans 6:13-14  Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.  14  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

The Symbol of Water Baptism

Washing / New Life

Washed – Sanctified – Justified by the Holy Spirit

Rise up clean

into a new life with a new boss

a clean purged conscience

Hebrews 9:14

Hebrews 9:14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

This Is the Way to Go

Separated from your old live

United with your new life

Now Washed & cleansed

NOW – BUT YE ARE!

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

1 Corinthians 6:9-11  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,  10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

This is symbolic of joy and of Drawing Near

This expresses our confidence and joy in drawing near with a true heart in full assurance of faith with a conscience clean from evil and our bodies washed with pure water

Hebrews 10:22

Hebrews 12:24

Hebrews 10:22  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 12:24  And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

Water Baptism means

Sincere Heart –

Cleansed  to have Pure Conscience

Bodies Washed with Pure Water

Washing of Regeneration

Water baptism is a symbol and a memorial of the work of the Holy Spirit within our lives.

Rebirth & Renewal of the Holy Spirit

Reborn Clean

Renewed by the Holy Spirit

Titus 3:4-7

Titus 3:4-7  But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,  5  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  6  Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;  7  That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Baptism is

A declaration of Taking up the Challenge

To Live a Godly Life

Separated & removed from the old way we lived

The 1st thing first

The 1st thing you must do is to be certain that you are a Christian.

You must know that you are “born again”

John 3:16 

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

There are 2 symbols of knowing that you are a Christian.

When you believe in Jesus  and Jesus is in charge of your life

You will see that there are 2 things you must do.

One is done once

The other is done many times.

These are not done “on your own things”

They involve the rest of the Church, manifested in the local church, and help to show that we our part of the church and belong.

There are two events that you will take part in

One is done once: Take Part in the Baptism in Water

The other is done weekly: Take Part in the Lord’s Table

Water Baptism

we join in following Jesus and each other in the waters of baptism.

The table of the Lord we remember weekly on the first day of the week

Fellowship with Jesus in this

This simple burial and rising up to life again shows that we belong

We leave our life behind we have a new one now.

Mark 16:16

Mark 16:16  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

This Is a Totally New Way Of Living
