The Case for Speaking in Tongues 9

Welcome back, my name is Dan Wooldridge, this is number 9 in the series, “The Case for Speaking in Tongues”

Why Should You & I

Speak in Tongues Often?

Continuing the Doctrine of “Other Tongues”

Just How Hungry Are You?

Just how hungry are you for the things of God?

Before you proceed any further you need to ask yourself this question

The Things of God Can Only

Be Known God’s Way

1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

You Have To Be Hungry

Unless you hunger and thirst for what is righteous and the gift of God for you you will not receive.

Consider these scriptures

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

John 7:39

(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Luke 11:9-13

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Luke 11

11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

Luke 11

13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Did You Notice This?

Even though the Holy Spirit was given when Jesus was glorified you still have to ask him for the fullness of the Holy Spirit and be hungry to receive this fullness.

If You Want to Receive

THEN YOU HAVE TO BE HUNGRY

Renewed and Washed

Our minds have to be “renewed & washed” with the Holy Spirit and the Word.

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Ephesians 4:23-24 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

In the Spirit of Your Mind

And be washed & renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Consider this in Titus – by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost

Titus 3:5-7

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The Washing of the Word

the washing of water by the word

Ephesians 5:26-27 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

We have to “replace”

natural thinking with “spiritual” thinking

How do you “replace” thinking?

The way to replace is to “displace” you do not have to dig it out, as in, to make a hole & then fill the hole

You displace water as a boat does, by simply moving through the water. Wherever the boat is then the water is displaced.

Read & re-read:

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Consider Also

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Paul spoke in tongues a lot:

More than them all!

1 Corinthians 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

Remember this is only part of the sentence because the main thrust of the teaching here in 1 Corinthians is about what happens during a church service or a meeting and so concerns church order.

The full sentence reads:

1 Corinthians 14:18-19 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

It Ought to Be Obvious

You should not have to do jump through intellectual twists and turns to establish simple truths that are from everlasting to everlasting.

Paul gives 3 reasons

why he spake in tongues a lot.

In 1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Let’s look at these three reasons

Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue (1) speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit (2) in the spirit he speaketh (3) mysteries.

(1) speaketh not unto men, but unto God (2) in the spirit he speaketh (3) mysteries

His Reason 1

You Speak Directly to God & He understands you – speaketh not unto men, but unto God

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

You DO THE Speaking BUT

it is your spirit that is praying – my spirit prayeth

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

His Reason 2

I am speaking “in the Spirit” in the spirit

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

As opposed to my

“natural mind & reasoning directing my prayers.

By speaking in tongues I put myself to pray in the spirit & not in the flesh & natural thinking.

Your mind with any doubts

fears or natural reasoning is bypassed! – displaced

but my understanding is unfruitful

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

No one can interrupt me

NOT even can my own mind.

I put myself into God, on purpose, as a simple act of will by starting to speak in tongues.

All thoughts (though they may keep all on coming into my mind) cannot not hinder the prayer or influence it.

God has chosen prayer

as a means of having his way in our lives & his plan for mankind.

The direct link

I am praying myself in a direct link spirit to spirit by passing by the mind with all its limitations & gain access to the thoughts that come from the mind of the spirit.

Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Do Mind the Things of the Spirit

Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

The mind of the spirit is not the mind of the flesh.

The mind of the spirit is constantly refreshed & inspired by the spirit (from the spirit).

God speaks spirit to spirit

He speaks via the spirit to our spirit.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

His Reason 3

I speak “Mysteries”

in the spirit he speaketh mysteries

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Mystery –

special understanding, when understood, that brings revelation

Mystery implies

a specialist understanding that comes from certain situations and conditions, something that is not immediately understood.

And revelation

a process that has to be received in order to gain insight and understanding –

something that is only a revelation by a certain path or procedure –

not open to sight without revelation.

A process that gives salvation and understanding

This omes from routes

that means to bring and to show the way

I can get beyond

the limitations of the mind and draw on the flow in the wisdom of the spirit who is the infallible guide and always agrees with the word of God.

Mysteries –

are those spiritual things beyond comprehension of the natural mind.

I can access the source of all wisdom and let him guide me.

Speaking in tongues is the way

that allows the Spirit of God to speak directly to my spirit.

I can pray myself out of the natural state and into the spiritual where I can receive wisdom in all its spiritual mystery.

A comparison look

Paul spoke in tongues a lot

1 Corinthians 14:18-19 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Paul had lots of revelations

& understood lots of mysteries

2 Corinthians 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

God reveals things to us

via spirit to spirit

we speak wisdom – yet not the wisdom of this world

1 Corinthians 2:6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

God reveals things to us yet again

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit:

1 Corinthians 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

The Spirit guides in all truth

It is the spirit who will guide us into all truth.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

I can access the source of all wisdom

& let him guide me.

I can simply pray myself

out of the grip of natural thinking – state

& into the spiritual thinking – state.

This is where I can receive wisdom in all its spiritual mystery.

THIS ADDED BENEFITS

How does he/she do that? They say.

Look At:

1 Corinthians 2:1-16 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

1 Corinthians 2

2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

1 Corinthians 2

5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: 7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

1 Corinthians 2

8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

1 Corinthians 2

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

1 Corinthians 2

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1 Corinthians 2

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Consider These Highlighted Phrases

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: –

even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. –

but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. –

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

This is from the man who said

“I speak in tongues more than you all”

The Spiritual Person Judges

1 Corinthians 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

My mind can be fooled

BUT my spirit has an ally.

My spirit is not fooled or tricked

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

We walk in the Spirit to bring

Death to the flesh – natural mind

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Remember the witness is

with our Spirit NOT our mind.

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

There are THE main 2 VOICES –

the voice of the MIND and

the voice of the SPIRIT.

1 Corinthians 14:14

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

Yes we can hear one voice

in our mind and another in our Spirit.

We have to learn to take notice of the voice in our SPIRIT.

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Joined – spirit to spirit

When we speak in tongues we are so joined

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:15-17

Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. 16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. 17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

It is the spirit not the mind

that searches the deep & hidden things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

It is the spirit not the mind

that searches these things – they are revealed to us through our spirit NOT our mind.

1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

We receive the spirit of God

that we might know what is freely given to us!

We might not ever know

if we only listen to our mind.

The spirit of the world certainly can’t help us very far.

1 Corinthians 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

We speak in the words

that the spirit teaches

The voice of the spirit compares spiritual matters with spiritual.

If you are not in the spirit

you can’t receive them. This helps explain why there is so much incorrect teaching. As you know what you are taught or what you believe has a direct effect on your behaviour.

You can only tell the truth

one way – you can tell a lie lots of ways.

There is one truth & many lies about any matter or subject.

Natural psyche – psychology –

from the head – can’t know the things of the Spirit.

Praying in tongues is the doorway

to the realm of the spirit – the access to the infallible source of wisdom.

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

He Knows What Is the Mind of the Spirit

Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

The spiritual person judges all things

We find this hard to accept

Judge all things but unable to be correctly judged in return by the natural mind!

1 Corinthians 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

You might fool my mind

BUT as a frequent tongues talker you will not fool my spirit.

My spirit is spiritual

The spirit of God bears

witness with my spirit

Bears witness with our spirit NOT our minds!

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Do you know the difference

between the voice of your spirit & the voice of your mind?

The 2 yokes

The yoke of your spirit

The yoke of your mind

Which would rather be under bondage to the “spirit” or the “mind”. Christians miss out on the Lord because they are under the yoke of the natural mind.

Be a constant tongues talker

& escape the yoke of the natural mind.

So we speak in tongues to communicate directly with God

So we speak in tongues

for a period & we are moved from being dominated by our senses to being led by the spirit.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

We must walk in the spirit

to escape the fables, lies, false teaching, outright heresies & practices that try to ensnare our faith.

So when we speak in tongues

we pray alive our understanding & revelation of the gospel – the secrets of God that we so much need.

This is why I speak in tongues

– so I keep on speaking in tongues!

So we speak in tongues!
